Comoé is a District, a first-level administrative division of Côte d'Ivoire.
The Comoé District is composed of 2 regions: the Indénié-Djuablin region, located in the central-eastern part of Côte d'Ivoire, and the Sud-Comoé region located in the south-eastern part of the country.
The Comoé District has 2 regional capitals: Abengourou and Aboisso. The towns - and trade - suffer from the severe deterioration of the roads during the crisis and the lack of routine maintenance. The state of the roads does not allow the District's major cities to be properly linked to the country's other economic centres, even though they are close in terms of distance, such as Abidjan or Yamoussoukro.
The District's economy is mainly based on agriculture. Agro-export crops such as coffee and cocoa are the most significant. In addition, colonial and post-colonial agricultural policies, combined with the enormous potential of the area in terms of densification and diversification of extensive crops, have favoured the development of cash crops, such as rubber and oil palm.
Nevertheless, the District's vegetation environment is beginning to suffer from advanced degradation, reflected in the gradual disappearance of the forest cover and the depletion of natural resources, caused in particular by extensive cultivation and agricultural clearing.
In terms of infrastructure and equipment, the Comoé District has relatively good coverage of basic infrastructure, particularly education, health and security.
In addition, projects linked to the implementation of the Presidential Emergency Programme, whose mission is to provide for the development needs of the district's populations in order to contribute to the emergence of Côte d'Ivoire by 2020, are gradually supplementing the existing infrastructure.
These projects concern all sectors, notably agriculture, rural development, the rehabilitation of tracks and roads, hydraulics, health, education, energy and justice; the aim being to reduce poverty by creating jobs and improving the living environment of the population.
Finally, the Comoé District is strategically located in Côte d'Ivoire. Indeed, due to its various potentialities, the District represents a communication node between Abidjan and Ghana, but also an activity zone integrating several of the main satellite towns linked to the country's economic capital.
