Tamasheq is a Tuareg language spoken in Niger, Mali, Algeria, Libya, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
The Tuareg have inhabited the desert regions of North Africa since time immemorial; they are believed to be descendants of the prehistoric Paleoberbers. Rock art sites with Tuareg writing attest to the presence of this people in the region several millennia ago.
Herodotus mentioned a Libyan people called the Garamantes, who are believed to be the ancestors of the northern Tuareg. In the Middle Ages, they lived in the south of Morocco around the great caravan centre of Sijilmassa.
