AFCON (AFrican Cup Of Nations)
The CAN (African Cup of Nations) is an international football competition in which the national teams of African countries qualify for the final phase. The first edition of the CAN was organised in Sudan from 10 to 16 February 1957. 4 national teams (Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa) were supposed to participate in this first edition, but only three were able to compete, as South Africa was disqualified because it refused to field a multi-ethnic national football team.
The small number of participants in the first edition of the CAN was due to the fact that most African countries were not yet independent.
