WASCAL 2023 Scholarships for ECOWAS Member Countries (Fully Funded)

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) under the sponsorship of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is pleased to announce application for its International Master Program in Energy and Green Hydrogen (IMP-EGH) in all fifteen (15) ECOWAS countries partners namely: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo-Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The WASCAL scholarships cover four Masters programmes. Each programme will last 28 months; 4 months for language training (English language training for French speakers and French language training for English speakers) and 24 months for master studies. One student per country will be selected for the WASCAL programme. Thus, a total of 15 students will be recruited by the programme: all selected candidates will be entitled to a full scholarship.

Available Master programmes

Below is a list of the Master's programmes available for WASCAL scholarships. Each programme will have a duration of 28 months, comprising a period of 4 months for language training (proficiency) followed by 24 months dedicated to Master's studies.

• Economics/Policies/Infrastructures and Green Hydrogen Technology, Université Cheikh Anta Diop – Senegal 
• Bioenergy/Biofuels and Green Hydrogen Technology, University of Lomé – Togo
• Photovoltaic and system Analysis for Green Hydrogen Technologies, Université Abdou Moumouni – Niger
• Green Hydrogen Production and Technology/Geo-resources (Wind/Water) And Green Hydrogen Technology, Université Felix Houphouet Boigny – Côte D’ivoire

Eligibility criteria

To apply for one of the Master programmes eligible for the WASCAL scholarship, you must

• Be a national of one of the West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
• With a minimum education of a B.Sc (Bachelor's) or equivalent in a scientific or engineering discipline relevant to the desired training. Technical strengths in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent are required. In addition, a background in economics and statistics will be an asset.
• Proficiency in English is an advantage.

The application file will consist of the following

• Completed and scanned application form:

  • Green Hydrogen Production and Technology/Geo-resources (Wind/Water) And Green Hydrogen Technology.
• Signed Curriculum Vitae containing information on professional experience and education.
• Letter of motivation.
• Two (2) letters of recommendation. Some programmes have formal requirements. Please read carefully the specific call for applications for each programme for more details.
• Copy of passport or national identity card.
• Certified copy of diplomas and transcripts (bachelor's and master's degrees).

Shortlisted candidates will be notified for an interview. The interview will be conducted in English before a scientific committee. The German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will provide the above-mentioned support to selected candidates, however self-funded candidates or candidates with other sponsorship may apply.
